Accounts and protecting information

Hashing

Turning information such as a password into a fixed jumble of characters by a calculation that cannot be run backwards. Sites store passwords this way so that a stolen list does not show the passwords themselves. Simple passwords can still be found, though: attackers put common passwords through the same calculation and compare the results.
