DNS record
One entry in the settings a domain name has on its DNS servers, like one listing in a phone book. The main kinds give the IP address of the site's server (A and AAAA records, for the two number formats), point to another name (CNAME records), name the server that receives the domain's email (MX records), or hold free text (TXT records). TXT records also publish the rules that help spot spoofed email (SPF, DKIM and DMARC). A record left pointing at a service no longer in use can let someone else sign up for that service again and show fake pages under the real domain name, such as shop.example.jp (subdomain takeover).
